Happy Palms

As far north as Canada, people jumped into a Midwestern
funnel and headed south. When they arrived here
they said, ten minutes from the border, 45 from
the island, far enough. Women with strong arms
volunteer for kitchen duty and dance night
or both. Former farmers, pipe-fitters and
their wives, people from cold winters
long nights, play shuffleboard and win
despite stiff backs and hands. War
           vets, engineers, women who can
fix anything gaze at you with
a strong eye, ready to lead
              to any card you think
               you are big
                enough
                to hold.
