April 2013

They would come

They would come
like locusts
gagging the international bridges
shiny new escalades and navigators
from Coahuila and Nuevo León

little fresa girls
with Hello Kitty wallets
stuffed with hundreds dollar bills
Mami and Papi dressed to the nines
to shop at Target
and La Plaza Mall

grotesquely stuffed carts
squeaked painfully down
sparkled aisles
$1000 dollar transactions
¡Zas!
¡de un trancazo!

now they stay behind
the wall of bullets
the narco-blockades
the silent roads
the anorexic shopping carts
no longer squeak
Hello Kitty hides
between the seats.
