Salt & Water

How do I separate thee?

together you are my ocean
my mermaid mother, goddess,
treasure and juxtaposition.

apart you are a lone leaf
in a Maryland autumn,
a fawn in the middle
of the road, a child trapped in a cave
with the search being called off.

—a cool reaction,
a song with only melodies
our ears understand and reject
—hymns for the drowning

in my mouth
a lotus blossom,
dark chocolate, sometimes
a whispered response
to an echo

—Edward Vidaurre
